The CANA rector and CANA vestry are likely to address the charges made in the Presentment with the same illusory candor that characterized the presentation of the budget at Annual Parish Meetings. Questions, if permitted, are likely to be deflected with a response that any particular charge questioned was adequately addressed in the opening statement.
Fr. Armstrong states in his recent letter that, "on Sunday, May 20th, by simple majority vote of parishioners in good standing, we will determine if the parish will remain in CANA or return to the Episcopal Church." The Constitution of our country requires a two thirds vote to propose amendments and then a three fourths vote to approve the amendment. A simple majority of 51% to bring our church under totally new oversight is hardly comparable. Do Fr. Armstrong and the Vestry feel that 51% is the minimum number of parishioners they can count on to vote to join CANA? What about protections for the minority opinions? Our U.S. Constitution carefully provides such protection. Armstrong and the Vestry prove they lack confidence in the congregation's potential vote; otherwise they would put it up for a minimum 75% threshold for approval.
The original questions mailed to the parish on January 15th were intended as a starting point for parishioners to ask their own questions, not as a comprehensive vehicle designed to entrap someone. I agree that the way the vestry forum was structured, with no actual dialogue, was a pretty transparent attempt to avoid actual accountability. So I am eagerly looking forward to postings tomorrow from those of you who actually attend. Until then, speculating on how the meeting will be handled is really just, uh, speculation?
May God bless you and keep you in the coming weeks, and may you all soon be back in the beautiful church on Tejon Street, which inspires beautiful memories as well as some sad ones.
And may the truth prevail.
I'm glad to see that the letter from the former members of the Vestry is posted. I could not find it when looking on the Gazette web site. Did it get published in the paper today? It seemed odd that I could not find it on the paper's website.

In Fr. Don Armstrong's recent letter, he says, "On May 20th, by simple majority vote of parishioners in good standing, we will determine we will determine if the parish will remain in CANA or return to the Episcopal Church." The U.S. Constitution in Article V requires a two-thirds vote to propose amendments and a three-fourths vote to ratify amendments. Our founding fathers believed America should be protected from simple majority votes holding sway over a large minority. Fr. Armstrong and the Vestry must believe that only 51% of parishioners could be counted on to vote their way.
